Mark Hanson’s 1970 Mercury Cougar
Mark Hanson grew up in Kaneohe riding dirt bikes and building hot rods. During the 1980s and early 90s he enjoyed “run-what-you-brung” racing at Hawaii Raceway Park. As a professor at UH-West Oahu, he never lost his passion for building hotrods and drag racing but like so many others on Oahu is frustrated by the closure of the track without a replacement.
Over the last three years he has worked with Wojciech Lorenc and Stan Orr to produce Hao Wela: The Untold Story of Hot Rodding in Hawaii video/movie to give a voice to the speed community of Oahu and share the Hot Rod culture. Hau Wela explores Hawaii’s unique speed culture through Mark’s search for a way to express his racing passion without a legal venue on Oahu and to advocate for a new track on Oahu. He will show clips at the lunch.
